Not to forget Noah, her jacketed jock of a boyfriend, to whom she over-promises her time. She takes up extra shifts at the local bistro for extra cash for college. She has a small brother who needs babysitting on nights her single-father is pursuing love with a woman after years of widowerhood. Elle wants to go to Harvard with Noah and is feeling the guilt of being an awful best friend, or bestie as they like to call each other, to Lee. This film, like its hot-blue-LA-summer aesthetic, neither intends nor attempts realism. But otherwise, neither her class status nor their class difference is given the space it usually would in such relationships. There is just one moment where we are jolted into realizing that Elle isn’t as rich as Lee and Noah, when a bitchy classmate whines, “Aren’t you poor?” as she opens the door to a party at their beach house. There’s brain freeze, cliff jumps, pie-eating contests, donuts, sand castles, Helium karaoke, and cosplaying characters you held onto with cloying ownership as kids. She spends the summer before college with Noah and Lee at their beach-house, trying to thumb through a list Lee and Elle made as kids, a wish-list of all things summer. Lee is headed to Berkeley, while Elle has to first make her decision of whom to go to college with - super hot boyfriend on the East coast, or super steady friend on the West coast.
THE KISSING BOOTH REVIEW HOW TO
The first two films, also directed by Vince Marcello, helped create these solid grounds ready to be shaken up, and the third and last film of the franchise, based on Beth Reekles’ books, is just one shudder after the other, from the very outset.Įlle and Lee are deciding how to spend their last summer before they head to college. This is a love that tested friendship, and friendship that tested love. Elle is also in a relationship with Noah (Jacob Elordi), Lee’s elder brother who is studying at Harvard. Elle (Joey King) is best friends with Lee (Joel Courtney). And so, picking between two very wealthy colleges and two subpar men is apparently the universal teen girl experience according to Netflix.Like any good, no sorry, great act of storytelling, The Kissing Booth franchise creates secure, steady relationships to then, with one unsparing sledgehammer after the other, unsteady it. When it comes down to it, the plot line is just a discount and photocopied All The Boys: Always And Forever from earlier this year.
THE KISSING BOOTH REVIEW MOVIE
Yet, because the movie itself doesn’t lean into Elle’s qualities apart from her relationship with the Flynn brothers, it’s tough to really care what she does either way by the time she arrives to the payoff of all the back-and-forth misery. There is a somewhat helpful (but uninspired) message about being true to yourself and not letting other people gear your decisions. Despite its best efforts, The Kissing Booth 3 is a predictable and bland finale.Īnd in the end, The Kissing Booth 3 doesn’t have a lot to say either. Many of the storylines feel like an overreaching attempt to give audiences more of these characters, but instead of giving them actual depth, the movie turns to petty love-triangle dialogue. The simple reason why The Kissing Booth 3 doesn’t work is because there did not need to be a Kissing Booth 3. The movie sees Elle and the Flynn brothers saying goodbye to their summer beach house whilst she makes a decision about where she’s going to go to college, because apparently Harvard and Berkeley are willing to wait up until move-in day in the fall to secure a spot for Elle. This movie really wants to give fans some sort of epic closure and if you’re invested in Elle’s odd triangle with Joel Courtney’s Lee and Jacob Elordi’s Noah, there’s a soft spot left for the premise to explore. Your journey must be finished with The Kissing Booth 3.

The Kissing Booth has known what it’s about, but this third film is so wrapped into itself that it crosses a line into boring and overzealous. And hey, I can respect that to a certain degree. The truth is The Kissing Booth movies were not made to be of quality – they were made for the high school drama and to watch three classically attractive boys in swim trunks fight over a young girl whose personality is said teen boys.
